White Peach Sangria

White Peach Sangria

White Peach Sangria with white wine, what a perfect spring/summer drink!

Sangria, traditionally thought of as originating in Spain and Portugal, is a great way to enjoy your wine on a hot summer day. (Although it’s pretty nice on a porch swing too, we hear!)

Sangria normally consists of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener and some brandy. For a fruit, you can use: oranges, lemons, limes, apples, peaches, melons, berries, pineapple, grapes, kiwi, and/or mangoes. For a sweetener, you may use: sugar, syrup, honey, or orange juice. Finally, you can also consider replacing the brandy with seltzer or a lemon/lime soda.

Note: The picture shows a little red wine and blueberries thrown in the White Peach Sangria for color.

We’ll be posting additional recipes in the future, you’ll be able to find them all on our recipes page.

Wine tasting

You’ve worked hard perfecting your wines here at Wines By Design and this is your chance to show it off. On Saturday, April 18 from 11a – 4p we are holding a competitive tasting event.

Scheduling an appointment for April 18? Just make it before 11a. The rest of the day is devoted to the event!

Special bonus: receive a Meet the Owners discount of 15% off all wine kits during the event.

You are allowed to submit up to 3 bottles per person for the 3 entry categories: Red, White and Dessert/Fruit. Your wine will be moved into numbered bottles and you will be the judge in the blind tasting. The highest scored wines will be the winner in each category and the highest scoring of those will be named Best of Show. Best of Show wins a $100 gift certificate at WBD and the other two winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate to WBD.

To enter, turn in your bottles at the store before Friday, April 17 (closing time is 7p). The entry fee is $5 or a bottle of your finest vino.

A quick recap:

  1. Drop off up to 3 bottles per person by April 17 at 7p.
  2. Join us for wine judging on April 18 at 11a.
  3. See how your wines stack up against all the WBD competition!

Note: As this is our first “official” Wine Tasting event (as new owners), we’d like to limit this year’s event to wine tasting only. There will be no appetizer competition this year. (Maybe next year!) Don’t worry: We’ll supply some appetizers ourselves.
Bottle cleaning

Bottle cleaning

Empty wine bottle

Bottles are a big deal at Wines by Design, we try to get the best bottles for you to put your best wine in. However, reusing your bottles is OK also. Just remember that proper bottle cleaning is very important, otherwise the sanitizer can’t do the job you need it to do. There are just a couple of simple steps to keeping your bottles clean. First, make sure that you rinse them once they are empty. This will flush out the last of the remaining wine. Leaving the bottles with wine residue in them will promote the growth of molds and if you miss that little colony on bottling day then they will ruin your great wine.

Note: We STRONGLY recommend that you do NOT put your wine bottles through your dishwasher. While this may seem like a great way to sanitize your bottles, you really can’t guarantee that either all of the food particles that may be hanging around the bottom of your dishwasher OR all of the soap that you may (or may not) have used will find it’s way into (and then not out of) your bottles. Then, when the drying cycle kicks in, those food particles (or soap) will harden onto the bottom of your bottle. Neither of these option are good for your wine. As a result, we suggest that you simply rinse your bottles well and allow them to drip dry.

Next is storage, you just rinsed out the bottle. Now, let it air dry upside down overnight. This will make sure that residual water and wine will drain out of the bottle and not pool in the bottom. Again, standing water is a hot spot for mold to grow. Last, when you set that bottle aside, why not put it in a case for storage? just make sure you store the bottle upside down to make sure that little spores and dirt stay out of your bottles. Following these suggestions will help the sanitizer do the job it was meant to and it will ensure that you have great wine throughout the batches you make.

Remember that we discourage anyone from using twist top bottles. If you want to, you do so at your own risk. The reason is that the twist top bottles have thinner glass at the neck than cork top bottles. The thinner glass may not be strong enough to withstand the pressure of the cork. The bottle may break as you are corking it or it might happen later in your wine cellar. Either way that is a wasted bottle of wine and someone might get a nasty cut if it happens while you’re corking. That would ruin a good time.

(Well, at least it’s on the calendar…)

Just a quick reminder: Spring is almost here and now is the time to put up your summer wines!

We suggest that whites age about three months, so now is the time to start a batch! If you enjoy a nice Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer or even a fruit wine on a mid-summer night’s eve, consider starting a batch this month.

We’ll even offer an incentive to help you enjoy those starry nights! For the entire month of March, we’ll take 15% off of our fruit wine kit price.

Stop in and start a batch of white or fruit wine for your summer enjoyment.
